History and Archaeology in the Wooded Landscape

A 1-day Workshop at the

Moorland Discovery Centre, Longshaw Estate nr. Sheffield

The workshop is one of the continuing series following on from the publication of the highly-acclaimed Woodland Heritage Manual and stemming from 25 years of leading research in this field. The manual was the result of a Heritage Lottery funded project in collaboration with the Woodland Trust, The Forestry Commission and English Heritage to provide information to volunteer groups, individuals and professionals about researching wooded landscapes. Come along and find out more. Events are suited to all from beginners and keen volunteers to seasoned professionals and academics.

This workshop examines the fascinating topic of ‘Woodland Boundaries and Trackways: History and Archaeology in the Wooded Landscape’. It will look at the identification of types of both woodland boundaries within a wooded landscape, their relationship with woodland management co-incidental to the existence of woodland, such as green lanes and hedgerows and issues around their ongoing management in today’s environment. Tutors for the day will be Professor Mel Jones, Professor David Hey and Professor Ian Rotherham.

The workshop will start with registration from 9.30am and run until around 4.30pm; refreshments. lunch and delegate pack included.

The morning will be a series of introductory talks on the topics covered and the afternoon will be a field visit to look at the practical applications of the information. The day will finish with a summary and discussion of the lessons learnt from the field visit.

The workshop is suitable for everyone who has an interest in and would like to learn more about woodland boundaries and trackways.
