Local Action Network - Invasive & Problem Species

E-mail Print

SYBRG (South Yorkshire Econet) have received funding from Defra to establish a Local Action Network to provide co-ordinated support and share skills and knowledge in tackling the area’s most common waterside invasive and problem species. We will initially focus on Himalayan Balsam, Giant Hogweed, Japanese Knotweed, American Crayfish and Mink along the rivers and their tributaries.

Species Surveys

One of the aims of the project is to start to map where the invasive and problem species occur within our area and what is happening to them. We are interested in any information that you might have. You can help us to do this by completing the survey forms we have designed for each species. Please click on the names to go to the survey form – Giant Hogweed, Himalayan Balsam, Japanese Knotweed, Mink and American Crayfish. We are also interested in gathering information about Buddleia and Wild Clematis.

Copies of the survey forms can be sent to you as a pdf document by emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with your contact details and the species you are interested in.

If you are not sure how to identify any of these species, please follow the link to the GB Non-native species secretariat to download identification sheets.

The records we collect will be sent to the secretariat for them to use in their database.

Local Action Network Group

Do you live in the South Yorkshire or North-east Derbyshire areas?

Are you or your local group interested in Invasive and Problem Species?

Do you think these species are a problem in your area?

If you can answer ‘yes’ to any of these questions you should be interested in a Local Action Network being set up with a grant from Defra to support the work of local groups and individuals in tackling problem species. Please fill in our LAN Groups form or contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to register your interest.

We will be organising meetings early in 2012 to set the network up.

BIOMASS PROVISION.

A student from Sheffield Hallam

University is researching biomass

provision in South Yorkshire.

Can the Woodlands of South

Yorkshire play a significant

role within energy provision

in the region in the future?

He is specifically looking into the

provision of bio-energy from

woodchip provided by the

management of South Yorkshire's

woodlands, with this woodchip

being burnt in small to medium

sized biomass boilers in municipal

buildings.

If you have some knowledge or

experience on this subject could

you spend five minutes filling in

these questionnaires. Below are

two questionnaires on survey monkey.
