HAVE YOU A STORY TO TELL?

 MOORS MEMORIES PROJECT

Do you remember …

  • Second World War “decoy towns”;
  • the forest plantations starting;
  • the ‘new’ water treatment works and the reservoirs;
  • picking bilberries, lichens, watercress or mushrooms;
  • digging sheep from snowdrifts; moorland fires; or
  • the old farms, ‘big’ houses, tracks, chapels and pubs?

The Moors Memories Project is an oral history project (part of the wider Moors for the Future Project) that aims to record the relationship between the people and the moors in and around the Peak District. HEC Associates have been asked to collect the stories and pictures of people who have lived, worked and played in two areas: the Bradfield/ Langsett/ Midhope area and the Holme Valley/ Holmfirth area. We are particularly interested in looking at the water and forestry industries, farming and moorland management. But we would also like to hear about the changes in the landscape and ways of life on the moors that local people have witnessed over the past 60 or 70 years. These may be memories of significant events, for example the Second World War “decoy towns” or maybe you helped dig sheep from snow drifts or tackle Moorland wildfires or collected bilberries for market. In other words, if you have a story to tell regarding life on the Peakland moors then we would love to hear from you.

If you are interested in sharing your moorland reminiscences, please contact: Christine Handley at HEC Associates Ltd., Venture House, 103 Arundel Street, Sheffield S1 2NT. Telephone: (0114) 272 4227 (weekdays 10am – 4pm) or: Email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it  or come along to one of our events:

Monday 13th June, 3-7pm Stocksbridge Library drop-in session

Wednesday 22nd June, 10am-4pm Langsett Barn (please book)

End of June, Holme Village - details to be arranged.

 The memories will be stored in a permanent public archive as well as forming the basis for a new exhibition based in the Moorland Centre at Edale and a series of new audio trails and booklets. BIOMASS PROVISION.

A student from Sheffield Hallam

University is researching biomass

provision in South Yorkshire.

Can the Woodlands of South

Yorkshire play a significant

role within energy provision

in the region in the future?

He is specifically looking into the

provision of bio-energy from

woodchip provided by the

management of South Yorkshire's

woodlands, with this woodchip

being burnt in small to medium

sized biomass boilers in municipal

buildings.

If you have some knowledge or

experience on this subject could

you spend five minutes filling in

these questionnaires. Below are

two questionnaires on survey monkey.
