Sheffield Active Citizens for the Environment Research Project

Feedback and discussions with local groups have shown the need for active integrated biodiversity / nature conservation / environmental networking throughout Sheffield. This research project will investigate how best to enable these networks and develop a forum in Sheffield which will support groups and individuals as active and empowered citizens. The first South Yorkshire Wildlife Action day held in January 2011 started the process of gathering information for the project.

The need for developing effective support networks is set against local authority and central government changes to funding and support; the aspirations of the ‘Big Society’; and new targets and policies on biodiversity and climate change. The project examines critical questions of support for existing groups (often with ageing memberships) and fostering of new groups from diverse communities to make networks (including electronic virtual networking and media support) accessible and relevant.

As part of the research, an on-line survey is now available for local environmental & conservation groups to fill in. The survey link is being sent to a contact person for them to complete on behalf of the group. If you are a member of a local Sheffield based group then contact your group's secretary and see if they have been sent an invitation to complete the survey. A downloadable version of the survey is available here.

We are also contacting other Sheffield community groups to ask for their views on being involved in new networks. Groups can take part in the on-line survey by using the following link Click here to take survey A downloadable version of the survey is also available here for groups to complete and return to SYBRG, Venture House, 103 Arundel Street, Sheffield S1 2NT.
